Today CWMS 6th grade students planted a Moon Tree. You may be wondering, “What is a Moon Tree??” In 1971, the Apollo 14 mission to the Moon carried a variety of tree seeds with them on their voyage. Once they returned to Earth, the United States Forest Service (USFS) germinated and cared for the seedlings until they were ready to be distributed across the country. Many of the original Moon Trees still stand today! In 2022, the Artemis I mission traveled around the Moon with more tree seeds, which were also germinated and cared for by the USFS. In October 2023, NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement and NASA’s Artifact Module received over 1,300 applications from schools, communities, and other institutions to become a steward of a Moon Tree seedling. CWMS’s application was chosen, and we will become part of a national legacy!
